The Government of India's vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, articulated under the leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, sets the goal of making India a fully developed nation by 2047. A key pillar of this vision is strengthening India's cities as inclusive, sustainable, and dynamic centres that drive long-term economic and social progress. Yet India's urban landscape shows sharp contrasts: modern metros with weak last-mile access, wide roads with narrow footpaths, and global city ambitions that sometimes overlook everyday needs like affordable housing and reliable public services.
These issues remind us that urban development is not just about infrastructure but also about equity, governance, and quality of life. India's youth are central to achieving this vision. As future professionals and citizens, they will shape the cities of 2047. While educational institutions nurture their leadership and critical thinking, young voices remain underrepresented in discussions on urban policy and planning today.
The Urban Vision Debate 2026 seeks to change this. By engaging students in structured, evidence-based dialogue, the debate offers a platform for youth to question assumptions, present fresh ideas, and propose forward thinking solutions aligned with Viksit Bharat @2047. Through this initiative, young citizens can help shape cities that are sustainable and futureready.
Objectives
The competition aims to:
- ❖Bring diverse perspectives together from planning, engineering, architecture, social sciences, sustainability, design, and policy.
- ❖Build critical thinking and communication skills through structured debates requiring evidence-based arguments and agile reasoning.
- ❖Promote active citizenship by allowing students to get engaged in civic discussions and bring fresh ideas.
- ❖Showcase student insights by compiling standout ideas for urban practitioners and policymakers.
The theme, "Cities of Tomorrow: Rethinking How We Live, Move, and Belong" invites participants to look beyond infrastructure and explore fairness, identity, sustainability, and long-term resilience.
